An Evening Stroll above Sennen.
Start. Sennen Cove.
Route. Sennen Cove - Mayon Cliff - Sennen Cove.
Notes. Sennen Cove, cove in name only for Sennen Cove rises from the southern edge of Whitesand Bay, a stunning arch of golden sun kissed sand backed by steep cliffs. A few houses line the seafront, surf shop, gift shop and café, not forgetting the 17th century Old Success Inn. On the seaward side of the prom a modern lifeboat station dominates the west end of the village, hiding the harbour, home to a small fishing fleet. It's a quaint quirky kind of place I loved it, and as the signage clearly states you're allowed to park on the double yellow lines, “fingers up to traffic wardens”.
We parked on the main car park at the bottom of Cove Hill, this gave us the opportunity to wander along the sea front. With the shadows already long and an ominous orange glow over the Atlantic Ocean we wandered west, passed the Old Success Inn, the gift shop and café already had the shutters down, onwards passed the Capstan Gallery and harbour we strolled to be met by a finger post inviting us to walk the coastal path, we obliged ascending Mayon Cliff to enjoy a stunning sunset from the old coastguard lookout that resides there. We witnessed the sun slip under the horizon before re-tracing our steps in the half light of a Cornish evening.
The Round House and Capstan Gallery, a rare survivor of the 18th century, a little more about that later.
Viewing Cowloe Rocks off the end of the breakwater.
Views from Mayon Cliff taking in Longships with its famous lighthouse.
Lands End seen over Irish Lady Rock.
Sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.
Coastguard Lookout above Mayon Cliff, built in 1912 and in active use for the proceeding thirty years, now in the safe hands of the National Trust.
From our descent wonderful views over Sennen and Whitesand Bay.
